Re: 1948 Standard 8 Overdrive Issue.

Do you have a copy of the wiring diagram? I see Howard had a picture of it in an earlier reply- it’s ESSENTIAL for exactly this sort of problem. I’d use a test light or a meter and see if you get continuity through each of the wires leading to the solenoid. Simple and if one or more of them isn’t up...

Re: 49 deluxe Starter/Starting Question

I would check the timing.

Assuming there’s gas up to and in the carb and there’s spark, the only thing that would cause a sputter is valves or timing.
If you pull the coil wire, will the starter try to start the car as normal?

Re: 1928 533 seven passenger

Beautiful car! I really enjoyed reading the history. It’s funny how the subtle differences make things interesting, such as verbiage (mentioned earlier). A couple more examples: windscreen (windshield), a clash (grinding gears), and petrol (gas)... ha! Growing up, I wasn’t particularly interested in...

Re: 1948 Standard 8 Overdrive Issue.

Sorry for the delayed reply: I’ve had my R9 apart and overhauled it on the bench a few years ago, and had to service it just a few weeks ago. If you have the Wade connector on the wiring bundle that goes from the firewall to the transmission, it’s easiest to just replace the entire bundle. Personall...

Re: R9 thrust washer spring

Hi Howard: I’ve made a couple of discoveries. First, it’s the thrust washer that sits adjacent to the free wheel cam that disintegrated, not the one next to the spring washer. I am embarrassed to say I simply missed them while I was taking stock of everything. So it’s 3.276 / 347607 I’m missing. In ...

Re: R9 thrust washer spring

Thank you, Howard! I think MM has found one for me, that’s where I located the replacement brass thrust washer. Here’s a question: In order for reverse to work, I needed to manually lock out the overdrive with the knob under the dash. Is that simply because the linkage was out of adjustment? I lost ...

R9 thrust washer spring

My thrust washer has suffered catastrophic failure, and thankfully I’ve located a replacement. However, I’m also in need of the spring washer that provides the tension for it, and simply cannot find one ANYWHERE. 3.277 / 371251 I’m wondering if there’s enough information about it to find a generic r...
