carbeurator problem

I have a problem with my 47 clipper with the small 8 cylinder engine. I have had the motor rebuilt and it seems fine. My problem is with the carburetor. At least I think that is where the problem is. At first the car was hard to start and after it started it would run fine except when I would be dri...

hard atart

I finally have my 47 clipper running and am driving it. It seems to be ok except for some fairly minor problems. It is somewhat hard to start, and I am almost certain the problem is with the carb. I believe the problem is that it is not getting gas when I first try to start it. After starting it run...

oil leak

This message of for Dave Czirr; I want to thank you for your help. If you remember I had an oil leak I could not stop. The problem was the mechanic put a rope seal at the end of the crankshaft on my 47 Clipper, and one did not belong there. I recently had the seal removed and I think the problem is ...

Re: oil leak

Once again thanks for the quick reply. I have the Packard shop manual, but it covers a lot of years and is not very specific. I will get a Motors Manual. Is that something that is easily available, and where would I go to look for it. Also, are there specific manuals for certain years and makes. The...

Re: oil leak

Your explanation is the first one I have heard that sounds correct. I can now see why the mechanic had so much trouble making the seal fit. It wasn't meant to be used in the first place. I assume if there was no seal on the bottom of the crank. then there would not be one on the top either. I have a...

Re: oil leak

I'm becoming more confused all the time. On the side of the car it says Deluxe Clipper, or Clipper Deluxe. Without going to look at the car I can't remember which way it is. The serial number came from the plate on the drivers side just under the hood, near the windshield. I probably gave you the wr...

Re: oil leak

This is an addition to my earlier post. The seal the mechanic replaced several times is the rope like seal at the end of the crankshaft. It is hard to find someone to work on these old cars. After some searching I found this fellow who seemed to know what he was doing. I know this is not the first m...

Re: oil leak

I'm sorry I have taken so long to answer your first reply. The car is a 1947 Deluxe Clipper. It was titled Jan 29, 1947 so I imagine it was probably built in 1946. The serial number from the plate under the hood near the windshield on the left side is 2112 16405. The motor has a number stamped on th...

oil leak

I now have my 47 Packard home and have driven a few miles. I'm very happy to say it seems fine except for a oil leak at the rear of the motor. I would very much like to have that fixed, but the mechanic that rebuilt the motor didn't seem to know what to do about it. The mechanic felt the oil was com...

Re: zinc in motor oil

Thanks for the reply. Honestly, until recently I never heard of zinc in motor oil A friend mentioned it to me, and I looked it up on the internet, where I found all kinds of advice telling me my motor would be ruined if I didn't address the problem. I thought that was strange because this is the thi...
