Re: Ring and Pinion Manufacturer Guidance

Adam, the standard gear ratio for the '38 Super8 is a 4.69. 4.36 was an option. The 3.58 will run 2500 rpm at 65 mph with a standard 31-32" tire, but the torque and power curves will be useful in deciding whether to keep it. It will be a month or two before we're ready for testing, but I will report...

Re: Ring and Pinion Manufacturer Guidance

Adam, thanks for the reply. the '38 320 engine is completely rebuilt and has some compression and porting enhancements that will improve the performance. I'm looking for 150 HP or better. The chassis has just come off the rotisserie and as soon as it's ready we plan to chassis dyno the entire setup....

Re: Ring and Pinion Manufacturer Guidance

Thanks. I'll try a call. I think a 3.98 would be great. With a few hidden changes, the HP has been boosted to 150 or so (calculated, yet to confirm) so I think the car would manage it well. Glenn

Ring and Pinion Manufacturer Guidance

While restoring a 1938 Su8 Coupe Roadster, I discovered the ring and pinion gear ratio had been changed to 3.58. I'm worried this ratio will be too 'tall' for the car and result in significant power loss during most driving conditions. The finding generates three questions: 1. Does anyone have drivi...

Recommendation of Steering wheel repair for 1938 Packard

The restoration of my 1938 Packard Super Eight Coupe Roadster is coming along nicely. The cream-white steering wheel, which looks to be a plastic variant, is badly split and needs to be replaced. The rest of the banjo wheel is in nice shape but will need stripping and rechroming. I'd appreciate any ...

Original photos 1938 Packard Super 8

I'm looking for advice on where to find high quality photos from various angles of the 1938 Packard Super 8. A Convertible Coupe is preferred but and model will be helpful. Just beginning to assemble a restored car after many years, and there are several areas to carefully check out. For example, th...

1938 Su8 Coupe Roadster Running Boards

I have a pair of '38 Su8 Coupe roadster running boards in good shape (no rust out) that need some metal work on the edges and addition of the correct rubber. I'd appreciate any recommendations for having this work done. The car is being fully restored, and the rubber and metal work need to be correc...

Re: Modern replacement for '38 Su8 Distributor?

I get the originality thing, and everything we're doing is reversible. Still, I have a running engine on a stand out of the car, and would like to experiment a little. So what options might be available for a modern distributor, preferably points-based but we may try some electronic ones also. We're...
