Re: 288 engine rebuild.or refreshening

Thanks Dave. I'm going to try to clean them first. We used to add a quart of kerosene or tranny fluid and just let them idle for about a half hour without driving. It used to work about half of the time. I will try that first and then update.

Re: 288 engine rebuild.or refreshening

I was reading the service manual and it had a procedure for cleaning hydraulic lifters. It must be a common thing with these. I adjusted the carb, set the idle and the timing. It really isn't smoking too much any more. There seems to be only 1 loud lifter and the sound seems to be coming from the #3...

Re: 288 engine rebuild.or refreshening

I did the compression test. Cyls 1,6, 7, &8 came out at 120 psi. #2 & 5 came out at 120. # 3 came out at 95. #4 came out at 140. I followed with a wet test. They all came out the same except 2 cyls were 121 instead of 120. Cyl #3 is weak, and #4 must have some extra carbon buildup. The rings all see...

Re: 288 engine rebuild.or refreshening

I said the testing part wrong. I will do a wet and dry test to determine if the rings are bad or not. My question is that on these engines is there any way that oil can get into the combustion chamber through the valve train?

Re: 288 engine rebuild.or refreshening

Thanks Adam and Dave. I will do a compression test this weekend. I was going to do a dry test then squirt oil in the cylinders to see if it is valves or rings like on an OHV engine. The thing is that a flat head won't have oil dripping down from the top like an OHV. Is there any way oil can get past...

Re: 288 engine rebuild.or refreshening

Thanks Tinman. It looks like it will take all of the length of the cherry picker to properly support the engine. You used a folding cherry picker. I think I will do the same. I started reading your blog. I want to do the same thing you did. I don't want to build a show car as my car is not a high va...

I found the blogs section. It is on the main forums page! I guess I was "looking too hard!"

Re: 288 engine rebuild.or refreshening

I have a 2 ton folding crane. I'm thinking that will work. I built a folding workbench in my shop for smaller V-8s and trannys and the like. I don't think it will hold the 288. How do you get to the blogs? I couldn't find the one you're talking about. I put tinman70 in the search box and just came u...
