Re: Camshaft Bearings

Minor update, even though it appears to be a perfect triangle, it is not. The holes only align with the oil hole pointing at the 8 o'clock position, just like it was when removed. So much for the cut away showing it at the top. Cross my fingers that this is the source of the oil leak.

Re: Camshaft Bearings

Agree, but you might also be correct, in that it is a very thin surface of Babbitt, and easily worn away, which might be the case with my old one. In any case, I am happy to have the new one, even if it did cost $ 225. The car is worth it.

Re: Camshaft Bearings

Well, upon closer inspection, there does appear to be Babbitt in the bearing housing. The one Fred sent me is a used one, and has a very slightly tighter ID than the one I removed. My old one was 1.367 the new one is 1.362. The new one also appears to have a wear spot in the same location as mine. I...

Re: Camshaft Bearings

I have secured a new rear cam bearing from Max Merritt. Am about to install when I thought I would check with the cut away that Dave sent just to make sure I have it inserted correctly. When I removed my old bearing which had been compromised by someone else, the oil hole was pointing at about the 8...

Re: Camshaft Bearings

Well, Fred at Max Merritt did find another one, and it is in the post along with the new ring gear. I will let you all know what I get and if it appears to have any Babbitt in it. I plan to install with a paper gasket out of some slightly thicker gasket material, and use aviation form a gasket on al...

Re: Camshaft Bearings

Yea, it is a mystery all right. If Max Merritt comes up with a new one, then I might see something in that one. Otherwise, I might have to make some inquiries to some kind of specialists in these engines. Not sure who that would be, any suggestions ?

Re: Camshaft Bearings

Adam: I agree on the flywheel face. It appears to be original and I too believe with limited use the car will receive, leaving it go is probably the best course of action. I did not have any chattering when letting out the clutch so it appears to not be warped from the heat. The clutch was slipping ...

Re: Transmission Removal

Yes, mine has the trough. see photo The Bijur hole is blocked by a square drive screw, bad choice of screw in my opinion, but I think I will leave it alone.

Re: Transmission Removal

Dave: See photo attached of mine, I do not have a hose attached, so I assume my is sealed ? not sure how the fork is lubricated however ? It is greasy, and also not sure how the gear change lever is lubed either. Must have to remove shift lever and lube both from the top. Interesting how the linkage...

Re: Camshaft Bearings

I am a bit surprised myself in the absence of any babbit, but I sanded off the edge of the lip and do not see any signs of a difference metal. (Photo attached ) It looks like all the same to me. The circles look like cutter marks from a lathe. I also see a somewhat shiny spot at the bottom of the in...
