zinc in motor oil

I have a question about motor oil. I have a 47 Packard with a recently rebuilt small 8 cylinder. The car has been run very little since the rebuild. Less than 100 miles. Should I worry about the zinc content of the oil, or would any quality oil contain enough to prevent damage. Also what weight shou...

Re: Is modification justified to save a Packard?

There was a time when I was opposed to people modifying an antique. I have changed my mind. It depends on the car. If you are starting out with something that is fairly decent, then I think it should stay as original as possible. On the other hand, there are many cars that are not much more than ben...

Re: timing engine problelms

Good news. The mechanic found the problem, and it was an easy fix. I haven't driven the car since the fix, but he said it was running fine. I still need a few minor things, but I hope to be able to finally drive it soon. At this point I think all I need is a new solenoid for the starter and a new ga...

Re: timing engine problelms

I don't know whether I should laugh or cry. The man working on the Packard had it running fine. (finally). He took it out for a drive, and everything was fine. The problem all the time was that the timing was off. The next morning he started it, and one cylinder was completely dead. I think this thi...

Re: timing engine problelms

I have some knowledge of how an engine works, but it is limited, so please excuse me if I don't describe things properly. The engine has been rebuilt. Before the rebuild it was smoking a lot, etc. It also had a misfire. I assumed the rebuild would correct the misfire, but it did not. I bought the ca...

timing engine problelms

my 47 clipper with the small 8 cylinder engine has had a really bad miss since I have owned it. I recently took it to an older mechanic who knows something about these old motor and he got it running fairly well by retarding the spark as far as possible. I still have a very bad miss when I accelerat...

Re: carbeurator problem

More on the same subject. Somewhere on the internet I found a copy of a Packard Service man training booklet for carbs. I thought I could easily find it again, but now I can't. Does anyone have a web address for that? Thanks

Re: carbeurator problem

more info on my carb problem: There is a small metal ball in the carb that restricts the flow of gas under certain conditions. That ball is missing in my carb. I believe that has been my problem from the start. I can find a new old stock carb for $300, but cannot find the ball. I hate to spend $300....

Re: Camshaft Bearings

I'm not sure my experience with a oil leak in the same place on my 47 Clipper applies, but here goes. Hope this helps. I had the engine rebuilt on my car. Before the rebuild I did not have a leak at the end of the motor where the transmission bolts on, but after the rebuild I was losing a lot of oil...

carbeurator problem

I have had the engine of my 47 Clipper rebuilt. It seems fine, except there seems to be a problem with the carb. The car will idle fine for as long as I want, but when driving it and giving it enough gas to get up to speed ( 45 50 Miles per hour} it develops a horrible miss. The person who rebuilt t...
