Re: oil leak 47 clipper

you are correct, I have asked this question before. The engine did not leak before a complete overhaul. The first time I brought it home it was leaking a lot of oil. I took it back and the mechanic took another look at it, and tried to stop the leak. This time when I brought home the leak was smalle...

oil leak 47 clipper

I've posted about this before, and this probably seems like a dumb question, but here goes. In an earlier post I was told the engine for the 47 clipper does not have a traditional oil seal at the rear of the engine. I don't know a lot about motors, but it seems there must be a seal at the end of the...

Re: Armored Cable Replacement - 1947 Packard Custom Super 21

Thanks for the information. I don't have a show car so if I ever have that problem it will get a 48 switch.

Re: Armored Cable Replacement - 1947 Packard Custom Super 21

This is probably a dumb question, but because the armored cable serves no purpose beyond making the car difficult to steal, why can't you just run a new wire and ignore the armor completely? I also have a 1947 car so this would be good to know for future reference.

Re: oil leak

I have not been under the car this time. I have it at home, and not having a lift it is a little hard to get under it. However, before the last attempt to stop the leak I did look at it and the oil was coming from the bottom of what I assume is the clutch cover.

Re: oil leak

Unfortunately I am not very knowledgeable about motors, etc. I have some knowledge but it is limited. I don't think the mechanic is aware of the things you mentioned because he doesn't seem to be able to stop the leak. The rebuilder is not a amateur. He rebuilds motors all the time, but because Pack...

oil leak

I recently had the motor rebuilt on my 47 clipper. This is the smaller 8 cylinder motor. There is an oil leak at the back of the motor where it joins the transmission. The people who did the rebuild don't seem able to stop it. Is there something special about this connection?

Re: Does any advice would be great?

I'm a firm believer in the "if it aint broke don't fix it" motto. It sounds like you have a car that is running fairly well, It is not uncommon for cars from that era to use a little oil. If it were mine, I would leave well enough alone.

Re: Tires

I believe you would be ok to mix tires if you keep the same kind of tire on each axel, although when I buy tires I am going with bias ply on all 4 wheels.

Re: oil leaks

just back of the oil pan on the drain plug end there is a heavy plate, that is where the oil is leaking of the floor. Would this be motor, or oil from the transmission? The oil in the motor is fresh, and the dipstick shows full.
