Re: 1929 640 Antifreeze

My research has confirmed that the older sulphate technology would not harm our components, while the newer extended life formula could destroy critical engine components on vintage autos.

Any suggestions as to a source of the older antifreeze would be appreciated.

1929 640 Antifreeze

Seems to be some confusion regarding the new extended life anti freeze in vintage systems. Looking for advice in preparing to winterize my 640.

Many Thanks

Re: 1930 Packard Model 733 8 Cyl. Water Pump Help

A related question... Although my 640 pump allows for lubrication via a fitting at the front fan bearing, the service manual calls for packing the water puimp bearing with grease. Does this indicate that the shaft must also be packed in the seal area, or is it a reference to the forward fitting ? Phil

Re: CUP GREASE

As a follow-up to my earlier message, I have purchased in ideal cup grease: DOW High Vacuum Grease, siloxane based and high viscosity.

Re: Transmission 2nd Gear Noise

Thanks to all for a very comprehensive explanation. The sound I am describing is definitely a whine in contast to a rumbling noise, so that I will now change the trans fluid and then enjoy my driving experience. One note : The Packard Manual calls for 600W gear oil.... any suggestions as to a partic...

Transmission 2nd Gear Noise

I have been experiencing a loud ( siren like ) noise while operating my three speed in second gear..non synchro..1929 , 640. Both first and third gears sound OK.

Seems to operate normally otherwise, but I am concerned that this might be the beginning of a larger problem.
