Packard air conditioning

Post by rwhemmy » Mon Jul 11, 2016 7:01 pm

I'm looking for help regarding the type of oil to use in the air conditioning compressor on a 1941 Packard.
Does anyone have experience w!ith this system? Thanks!

Welcome!

I'm not a refrigeration expert and have no experience with Packard A/C systems but I'm quite certain that the choice of compressor oil depends on the choice of refrigerant; that is, Freon 12 systems require a different compressor oil that CFC-134, etc. I should think any good AC service shop should be able to recommend the compressor oil once you've determined which refrigerant you'll be using. I hope this has been at least partially helpful.

Can you still buy Freon R12? It has been banned in Europe for over 20 years. R134 is the standard type now, although I think there are other, even less damaging refrigerants now. It might be that new seals in the compressor are necessary to run it. Best to talk to an A/C specialist.
