1937 Super 8 THERMOSTAT

Post by John 3:16 » Wed Oct 05, 2016 11:35 am

Does anyone know if I may purchase a generic thermostat for my car at Nappa or another auto parts store?

Thanks

Yes if you have a thermostat in the cylinder head water outlet. But no for the thermostat in the upper radiator tank that controls the shutters.

Hello. I just saw a 37 super 8 that I think to buy.
Yet some questioning :
1. Radiator starts to leak in the middle of the the net. How difficult is it to remove it to send it for repair? Bonnet, front grillé, radiator body cover... what else is to remove? Not the wings I hope...?
2. As the front grille will be removed, I’d love to put it in function again. So far it is open non stop. À thermostat, grease the parts, what else do I have to consider?
Tx in advance.

Bill Hirsch should still have the shutter thermostats, though the supply is getting thin. Its a Fulton Sylphon unit.

Thank you Dave, but what about the dismantling?

I'm not sure, check the shop manual which may cover it. It was a common service job so I am sure you didn't have to remove the front clip. In my 34 the thermostat is in the rear side of the radiator tank so feplacement is easy. Do you have a shroud between the radiator tank and the shutters?

No idea. I could only know when I buy it and start to dismantle...

I'll check my copy of the shop manual and see if it is discussed.

UPDATE: The shop manual has information about the 2 different ratings of shutter thermostats and the adjustment of the linkage and preload to the shutters, but no information about removing and replacing the thermostat itself.
