Hello Paul

Welcome to the forum!

The engine oil capacity is 7 quarts, to bring the level up to the petcock. Page 25 of the link below gives more information.

I run my 533 with an SAE 30 low detergent oil. But 10-40 would be just fine. The important thing is the level of detergent content within the oil. The 5th series uses a by-pass oil filter, or no filter at all. Without full-flow filtration, it is better to run a low detergent oil which allows contaminants to settle to the bottom of the pan, rather than to use a high detergent oil that holds dirt in suspension, as modern oils do. I look for API specification SD, or similar. Just change the oil regularly.

To Adam's excellent advice I would add the following.

If you don't know that it was done within the last 5 or 7 years, I would drop the oil pan before any oil change and clean the pan and the oil pump intake screen. If that had not been done recently and the car was previously using non-detergent oil, the use now of a detergent oil presents the risk of gradually allowing old sludge to loosen and circulate through your engine which could cause considerable damage.

Rather than going through the dance of dropping the pan, would not several flushes with kerosene serve the same purpose ?

Safest course is to drop and clean the pan, I'd not want to rely with my engine on kerosene flushes doing the job. Plus dropping the pan is an easy job.
