radiator removal

Post by Rachel@1951 » Thu May 09, 2019 10:58 am

I have a 1937 120 C and I want to remove the radiator. I have a shop manual but it does not have information on removing the radiator. Is there a manual or a more detailed document that will give me the information.

Thanks.

I don't recall any Packard document detailing the process, and I believe you'll find the steps rather apparent after you take a good look. I saw it done once in a hotel parking lot during the Packard National Meet in Boston. Just from memory from so long ago, remove the hoses and allow the system to drain, remove the hood and the radiator support rods, the front splasher and any connections to the winterfront (shutters) if present. Remove the fan and then the water pump. There are probably one or more large retaining bolts accessed from beneath that go thru the front crossmember to hold the radiator cradle - and there are probably some spacers or shims involved as well so keep track of their positions. You might want to cover the core with cardboard to prevent damage to it and your knuckles!

After you get it out, you might want to come back here and give the precise steps involved so the next person to come along has current information.

Ps : the radiator drain is the bolt in the middle underneath?

The radiator drain in the 1937 "120" is in the lower radiator tank outlet casting. The 1937 Super 8 does not have a drain in the radiator, a lower drain is provided via a plug in the oil cooler. There are illustrations in the shop manual.

Dave,

Thanks for the reply. I will document the process as you suggested.

Dave is on target. hood, hood rods, fan/waterpump and other stuff. if you can loosen it from the radiator collar, it will come out. don't be afraid to stand on the cylinder head...nylon strap hooked to the upper radiator tabs so you aren't totally bending down. Get volunteers to help guide it out....
