1937 super 8 water pump

Post by Olivierdejong » Sat Jul 20, 2019 11:52 am

Hi Dave.

One more time questioning...
Just got back from happily Packarding around with Victoria 37 and suddenly, acute groaning moan, fume and awful water/ grease smell. All coming from the water pump axle just behind the fan. Even some water drops from the engine.
I suppose I burned the water pump, no idea how, but now is time for repairing.
Anything interesting to know about dismantling it from the engine?

Thank you in advance.
Best regards.
Olivier

Had you forgotten to lubricate the pump?

Removal is a very straight-forward job, remove the fan first. Putting some cardboard over the radiator core might save you from some skinned knuckles.

Well the little tank on the forward side seemed to be full.
But the free grease on the axle was scarce indeed.
I have restart the engine after regreasing the whole thing and it went fine on a 10 miles test.
But ever since there is a water drop on the bloc side of the pump, every 5 seconds, requiring one more gal water in the radiator after two days.
Don’t know who will be able to repair that, but I’ll remove it indeed to sort is out.
Happy to know it’s easy to remove.
Good idea the cardboard indeed...

What is the lubrificating proper process? Fluid in the reservoir and grease on the axle every 500 miles? Shall I totally fill the axle cavity with grease?

Best regards.

Is there a rubber seal around the axle on engine side, or anything else?

The details are shown in the illustration of the pump construction in the shop manual. Do you need me to scan and post the image?

PS - turns out I already had it scanned. The packing at the impellor end is graphited cord which you can buy either in rings, or just in simple cord, I get it at the local plumbing store, same material plumbers use to pack valve stems on home hot water heating systems. Use the packing nut to compress it to form and form the seal around the shaft.

Hello Dave.

I removed all the 4 nuts of the fan and took it apart from the engine.
Then the big nut in front of the pump axle.
And the 5 nuts around the pump.
But then it does not move. Should I hammer it lightly ?
Does the axle come out with the pump or apart?

Best regards.

As nothing moves, I wonder if I consider well the pump limits.
The pump is well all what’s inside the red stripes on my pic?
Best regards.

With the 5 nuts removed from the clamp that holds the pump in place, you should be able to remove it. Yes, the pump is the entire assembly within your red lines. You might try tapping it very gently. If the fan belt is still in place, remove it.
