For those with Packards 1934 and back with 14mm spark plugs that use high tension spark plug leads with the eyelet or ring fastener to the plug with the knurled thumb screw, Autolite #303 plugs are still available; unlike most all other modern plugs these still have the removeable nipple and threaded post for the thumbscrew. Just picked up an extra set yesterday, about $2 each from the local auto parts store and one wonders how much longer this item will be available. In addition to being a proper heat range for these engines, they have the added benefit of the black oxide shell color, cadmium (silvery) plug shells didn't come along until 1956 or 57. Knurled thumbscrews available from Restoration Supply and elsewhere.

34PackardGuy, Thanks for the tip about the Autolite 303 sparkplugs. I think I'll go over to the auto store and get a spare set for my 1933 1002.

I buy up NOS AC spark plugs and thread them with 10-32 and some with 8-32 threads. I only use mint conditon AC plugs that do not state DELCO on them. AC plugs is what Packard used in the early 30's. I also make the knurl knob per the original Packard blueprint.

Hi Bruce: thanks for posting, it's always good to know of sources for parts for our Packards. Do I assume you only use non-resistor AC plugs? And what heat range - AC45 or 46 seem to run the best in L-8 Packards.

I understand the knurled retainer nut was last used in 1934 but was of a smaller dimension that the ones used earlier, for example in the 7th series - any dimensions or perhaps a photo of them and the years they were in use for?

Send me an email and I can send you my catalog with photos of the parts I make. The smaller nuts were used on 9th, 10th and 11th, I believe. Henry Yeska makes the larger ones, I believe.
I have non resistor plugs and resisitor plugs. Heat range is from 43 to 48. Problem is finding enough plugs that are identical to make up a set. AC used a lot of suttle differences in their plugs. Some have no green stripes, some have all narrow stripes, some have a mixture of wide and narrow stripes, some have a dot after AC and some do not.
