48 Eight theft proof number location

Post by 1955Desoto » Mon May 10, 2021 3:35 pm

Is the theft proof number on a 48 Eight on the firewall as in earlier years? And is the engine number on the left (non manifold side) of the block?

Yes, and yes (to both questions).

Just to be clear, the theft-proof number is just above the heater box location. And the motor number is on the non-manifold side of the block.

Ok. Found the Theft Proof Number easily. The Engine number is another matter. I'm on the non manifold side of the block, using a light. No numbers to be found. Either this was a stolen engine and the crooks ground off the number....or I don't know just where to look yet. Going with the latter, can anyone give more specific directions? Forward of the distributor? Above the generator? Forward of the starter? High on the block? Low on the block? All clues appreciated! Ed

Could be in a couple of places. First place to look is on the block and depending on engine can be on either side of the distributor. Should be just below the head/block parting line and is usually on a smoothed pad but some have found it to be stamped in the rough casting. Depending on whether the person who did the stamping ate his Wheaties that morning it can be very faint and is frequently covered with dirt and grease. Second place to look is on a smoothed pad again on the block below the head but to the rear above the starting motor.
