1930 Custom Eight Touring
1930 Custom Eight Touring
I'm trying to confirm the VN number for a 1930 Custom Eight Touring Packard that has been in my family and we are looking to restore. The Patent Plate and original purchase receipt seem to suggest the VN is 182-406, but that is not aligning with what I would suspect from my research, which would instead be 410-406. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: 1930 Custom Eight Touring
Do I guess that your car is a 740 touring?
I believe you are confused by the later method of vehicle number assignment adopted in 1932, the so-called "body type + production number", meaning a three digit number which identifies the chassis and body type (410 in your case), and then the sequential production number. But that system was not in place at the time of the 7th Series. Your vehicle number would be in the same numeric range (and sometimes identical to) the motor number, for the 740-745 run of vehicles that number would be between 179000 and 187999.

Yes, a 740 Touring.
Thank you for the quick response. I did not realize that the body type + production number did not start until 1932. That would explain why I cannot find 182-406 on the Packardinfo.com "Decoder". The motor number is in that same range. Thank you again, mystery solved (the first of many I'm sure).
