Need help finding build sheet for my 1956 Caribbean

Post by BeardBros » Tue Oct 22, 2013 5:53 pm

I recently aquired a 1956 Caribbean and would like to get a copy of the build sheet to verify how this car came from the factory. There is no sheet on the car so I need to find someone that might have a copy of it. Any help would be much appreciated.

What is the vehicle number? If it's a hardtop it will begin with 5697-xxxx. If it's a convertible, it will begin with 5699-xxxx.

Along with the VN, I'd love to have the theft-proof number which is the large embossed number on the cowl above the heater box. It most probably begins with the letter "D" followed by 5 numerals.

The 56 Carib build slips are in a private collection and not generally available but much of the information about each one is given in roster of 1956 Caribbeans which was published in The Packard Cormorant, Autumn 1987 (#48). Extra copies of that issue are still available thru PAC.

Thanks for the help guys. I am new to the Packard world and it looks like there is a good community for the care of these cars. I posted a picture of the vehicle tag. I will put the theft proof number up as soon as I get back to my shop where the car is. As for the build slips in the private collection, how would I go about contacting the owner of those? I think it will be important to have for my car. I was told by the previous owner that the car was a special build.

Thanks for the VN, and I look forward to the theft-proof number.

I don't know that it was a truly "special" build, they were all special in some sense. Yours is a bit unusual in that it was among only 31 known to be originally painted in a single color, "M" paint code is Dover White. Though it's not indicated on the VN plate, according to the article in TPC I referenced earlier, your car should have Trim code 37, all white leather both sides. Again referring to the data in the PAC article the owner at the time (1987) was a Jordan in TX. Updates to that roster show the owner as an E. Jones in Illinois. The car is listed as having been sold new by Gulf Stream Motors in West Palm Beach, FL. The same article says your vehicle has automatic transmission, front heater, radio, power steering, power brakes, power windows, power seat, wire spoke wheels, day-nite mirror, and power-lok (positraction) rear axle. All of these were standard equipment except for the wire spoke wheels and power-lok rear axle.

Can you post a picture of your car? I have in my memory an all-white 5699 which was later in it's life modified by adding a continental rear spare tire kit and some sort of fiberglass toneau cover over the rear seat and I'm wondering if yours is that car.

I believe the owner of the build slips (actually they were shipping orders) still wishes to remain anonomous.

I do know that this is the car that was owned by Mr. Jones in IL. I bought it from his son. My car has all the things you mention it should have. There is no evidence of a continental kit or fiberglass tonneau cover. Here is a picture of the car the day I got it.

Thanks for the photo. I'm glad yours isn't the one that was modified, IMO it was rather hideous. Best of luck with your car, I own a 56 Carib convertible as well, #254. I look forward to hearing more about your car as you get more familiar with it.

Just a reminder that I found the build slip (well, part of it) for my 55 Clipper under the carpeting on top of the transmission hump.
