Barn Find 1500-1003 vehicle number questions/research

Post by TheRodFather » Fri Jul 10, 2020 12:01 pm

So recently I found a 37 super8 1500 1003 in a barn in Kentucky. I bought it with no title and no number plate. However, I have been doing some extensive reading on this site before I posted this.

I believe the original number is 1003-627. Based on the info I got here, I have found this 3 digit 627 number chalked on the inside of the seat back and it appears to have been on the inside of a door card also (its water damaged) From my reading, I believe this to be the number used during interior assembly to identify the interior to the chassis on production. I am still combing through the pieces of this project looking for more numbers.

My biggest question is, I guess.... Does anyone know if 1003-627 has ever been registered and do you think I could confirm that this would be the factory number?

When you ask has the number "ever been registered", registered by or with whom? State Motor Vehicle agencies, car clubs or roster keepers? If the former, they generally don't respond to such questions and no longer have any data from that far back. If the latter, if you're a member I'd suggest you contact the Packard Club rooster keeper for that model.

Assuming the parts with the chalk markings weren't replacement parts from a mongrel car, you're quite probably right about the vehicle number but an absolute confirmation could only come from the car manufacturer or their records. One such record was the Vehicle Unit Record Card which recorded vehicle, motor, and theft proof numbers as well as original owner, paint and trim details, etc. Only a handful of these cards survive, if you provide your theft proof number I'd be glad to check for you.

Thanks for the information.
Yeah, I have contacted every dmv from Florida to here in Ohio with no results found. And yes, I was hoping to cross reference the number to rosters like the owners club and such.

Unfortunately, I pulled this thing out of probably 7 different barns on this guys property and we searched high and low for any identifying marks. He bought it from a guy in Florida back in 71 with no title. It was sitting in a barn then, but assembled. The Kentucky guy started to restore it but got in over his head too quickly.

Anyway, I guess I will become a member and dig deeper into my Senior's past.

Also, The anti theft number is 307567, thank you for checking for me.

Sorry, I have a good amount of data on 1937 seniors but nothing on 307567.

I have been documenting '37 Seniors since 1967 and have never crossed paths with your 1500.

Congrats on saving another one of these great Packards!
