Details of a 1936 120B Convertible Sedan

Post by shahrukh.mateen » Sun Aug 09, 2020 4:32 am

Hello all :) ,

I am Shahrukh from India, a fellow automotive enthusiast.
My uncle owns a 1936 Packard 120B (most probably) Convertible Sedan which he acquired about a decade ago.
We are planning on a full restoration.

I was wondering if experts here could help me dig up any details.
The anti-theft number embossed on the firewall is: 259375.

Unfortunately, The ID plate has went missing due to several relocations. We are trying to recover it.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Regards

Greetings, and welcome!

Unfortunately, once the patent plate with the vehicle number is missing, unless you can get the number from whomever you bought the car from, the chances of recovering the number is very low, approaching zero. And surviving records that correlate theft-proof numbers to vehicle numbers are very limited, covering perhaps only several hundred cars and your is not among them.

Hello Dave,

Thanks for such a quick response.
I'll try and dig up the engine number and search for the missing ID plate too.

Hello flackmaster,

Thank you. My first attempt would be to get as much information for my car as possible.

Can anyone tell me how many 1936 Packard’s 120B four door convertibles (997) were made?
Thank you in advance.

Packard did not keep production records by individual body style until the postwar era, but historians have made production estimates based on the vehicle numbers of surviving cars. As you probably know, the second half of your vehicle number (number on the patent plate) is the sequential production number for that specific body type and chassis; for the 1936 junior cars the numbering began at 1001 so the first 1936 120B convertible sedan would have been numbered 997-1001.

Mr. Charles Blackman has been the most prolific of the historians doing production estimates, his production estimate for the 1936 120 convertible sedan is 980 units.
