1936 Twelve Dietrich convertible victoria

Post by Dave Czirr » Wed Mar 06, 2013 9:01 am

Here's a few photos of this owner-restoration which has been ongoing for about 8 years now. The owner, my friend Sal from NJ, bought the car more than 20 years ago and the restoration started in early 2005. In addition to it's rarity it's an interesting car in several respects. First the Dietrich and body dash number indicate it was originally built as a 1935 Twelve victoria but was apparently left unsold and was factory updated to 1936 features and renumbered, and secondly some prior owner had removed the top and irons and replaced it with a steel turret top thought to be from a prewar Buick. Sal's no stranger to superb restorations, his just previous effort was a 1936 "120" convertible coupe with took top AACA honors and the Parkin award. To say he is meticulous is an understatement. Hope you enjoy the pictures starting from it's first emergence from storage (that's me standing in the back seat) up to yesterday. The next work is to fit the fenders, running boards and hood, and start the interior. I particularly like the choice of wheel treatment, painted rim and hub with chrome (actually stainless) spokes - very restrainted and Packard-like, avoiding all-chrome wheels which to many are gaudy.

The local Packard boys gathered today out at Sal'sl engine dress-up finally finished and time to help install the hood. It's 5 sections in total, the two top hinged panels with the fixed center section was installed first, followed by the side panels. An easy enough little project but lots of hands required. The front fenders are painted and after a little detail work on the underfender support brackets, they'll be next. It's going to be a stunning car and with the exception of paint, primarily an owner-restoration.

The 'Packard boys" went out to Sal's again this weekend to hang the front fenders. A rather awkward and involved jobs with so many fasteners in so many locations, all of which need to align. And also the issue of keeping the fender welting in place during the movement. I don't know if I've mentioned it before, the color is Shirvan Green. Hope you enjoy.

Absolutely gorgeous color on this car, and I agree with you in regard to the wheel treatment. Will it be ready for Hershey this year?
Are there any photos of the car with the turret hard top???

Recent photo, convertible top fitting nearly complete, interior finished by unfortunately no photo. The car should be ready in time for the PAC National at Reading, PA.

I saw the finished product in Hershey. One of the finest restorations I've seen. It will be rewarded with an AACA National Award at the annual meeting in February.

The color balance is a bit skewed due to interior lighting but I thought you might like a few photos of the lovely finished interior. As always click to enlarge.

Sal's efforts were rewarded by the car winning AACA's Joseph Parkin award at the February AACA meeting, the award to the best Packard at a Divisional Show (Hershey, Fall 2015). It's Sal's 2nd Parkin award, the first for his restoration of a 1936 "120" convertible coupe finished a few years ago.
