Update on Packard: transmission out, new seals and gaskets all around. Starter is in need of replace though, anyone have any other alternative conversions? The only new one I could find was $210

You might try Mike Dulinski. He has a multitude of 55-56 parts cars and may be able to help. AFAIK, the Packard spacing or mounting is enough different from other cars it may be a challenge to find a direct crossover to another mfgs engine.

Thats not a Packard engine? Surprise, I swapped it for dodge 360 for reliability. After weeks of trying to repair the Twin Ultramatic I was faced with rebuilding or swaping for a 700r4. To make it short I found the new engine on craigslist for $300 and decided to go with it. The old engine is for sale with transmission and components if anyone is interested: http://siouxfalls.craigslist.org/pts/5812016444.html ( I just guessed on a price will consider offers )

It is a shame that you had to go away from original, but I understand your decision. Perhaps you could write something about how easy (or difficult ) it was to fit the Dodge engine? How do the mountings align for instance? or the exhaust headers? or the shift linkage?

It will be interesting to hear how you think it compares from a driving point of view too.

The Swap to a 360 in my Packard is something I half way regret, so I have decided not to do the same to my Nash. The engine is trashed in the Nash and I have been searching for a 374. I had one that I was going to put in, but the deal fell through. Another thing I plan to do is put a 1956-57 AMC T-85 in (Because of the abuility to mate to the torque tube), rather than spending the money rebuilding the frozen Ultramatic. Has anyone ever done that before? I have found the trans, I expect my biggest problem will be is finding a manual flywheel and clutch. The T85 I have found has an overdrive unit BTW.
Anyone have a good 374 or 352 they are willing to give up at a reasonable price?

Any updates? I was curious to hear more about the 360 transplant and how it compared in performance.

Update on the Packard: I've got it on the road again! Overall the 360 feels about the same as the 320 in my opinion, the 320 may have more low end torque though. Even though its not the stock engine, it still drives the same. The suspension compensated nicely for the new engine, ride height increased a good three inches. If you recall I was looking into the legendary "Fish Carburetor", and I bought one recently. The M-3 carb will be installed first thing tomorrow to replace the touchy Holly 500 2bbl.
Projects may have to wait for awhile, I leave to begin training for the USAF Aug 8
