Some of you may enjoy these photos of a very lovely and mostly original car just purchased by a friend.

Dave,
Thanks for the pictures of your friend's very nice 1953 Clipper Deluxe club sedan. Being an owner of a 1953 Clipper Deluxe 4 dr. touring sedan I can confirm that the interior of the car appears to be very much original and in excellent shape. The upholstery and the door panels look very much original. It is hard to see but it appears to have a black rubber front mat which these cars had. My car was also painted Orchard Green like your friend's car but mine was two-tone with an Orchard Green lower and a Galahad Green Metallic roof, the KO color code. Mine was repainted in a two tone green, but not the original colors. Did these models have a rubber mat in the rear of the passenger compartment or was it carpeted? Hard to tell in the photos. My two 53 Clipper Deluxes that I have owned have had the rubber mats up front in the passenger compartment but nothing in the back. In this car the rear passenger compartment floor covering appears to be black, which matches the black front rubber mat. I would guess that it was fabric of some sort, since it seems to have worn out before the rubber mat in my cars.

Hi Ken: I'm no authority on these models and should probably read up on them a little, but I think the base model had a rull rubber floormat in front, like 52 and 51, and a rather plain thin carpet covering in the rear. I would gladly ask the owner just what's in this car and will do so if you wish, but I don't know that it means much as we don't know if it's original. I enlarged the one photo and what I see is a carpet front and rear and those large black rubber Packard-logo heel pads on both sides in the front.

Thanks Dave,
I believe your observations are correct. If the car still has the original floor covering in the rear seat or if the car's owner knows what was originally on the rear seat floor, I would certainly be interested in knowing. I do know that there was a black rubber mat in the front, patterned to look somewhat like carpeting. Do not know of any source for such rubber mats today so I expect a black carpeting or at least a color of carpeting matching the interior would be the best we can do today.

I just spoke with the owner, and that's what he said to me, except it's green rubber, not smooth but patterned to somewhat resembler carpet. The rear is a rather low-grade carpet material. I'm not aware of any current source for that material in the front.

HI: I noted your comments regarding a "pebbled carpet like finish" to a front/rear rubber mat. I have seen items
like these on the cheaper models (taxi-cabs etc). I think someone has these--or did repro them in the past. I
would check catalogs from Ford & Chevy suppliers of late 40s/early 50s --even a JC Whitney type supplier. If it
was duped once, there may be something out there similar to use designed for another car--you can always vinyl
paint the color you need. IF nothing even close can be found, consider buying a large rubber mat of the type
that retail stores often have outside of a main entrance, and trim to fit.

Restoration Specialties has pebble surface bulk mat by the foot in a 36" width. Also have a few other patterns.
