810 Cord "phaeton"

Post by Dave Czirr » Mon Oct 27, 2014 6:37 am

Asking again for forgiveness for another non-Packard photo but this car was just too rare to pass up. Photo at yesterday's annual meeting of CCCA's Metro Region.

Not that all Cords are not rare, but this one especially so as, according to Josh Malk's authoritative book on the 810/812 cords, only two 810 "phaetons" were built with the bustle trunk to overcome the shortage of storage space on these cars. I still find it curious that Cord called this body style a phaeton, but then again so did VW just a few years ago with a 4-door sedan. The car is from the Marano collection.

Highly recommend Josh Malk's book: "The Complete Cord". A beautifully done, large format tome on the 810 and 812 Cords. Many color photographs of surviving cars and it is full of illustrations, tables, graphs, and period photos, some being shown for the first time. The story covers the trials and tribulations in bringing the cars to market. Kinda reminds me of what Packard may have been going through with the '55s and '56s. It is not inexpensive at $90, but well worth the cost. I am acquainted with the art director. Sadly, Malk recently passed away. Something to put on your Santa list.

Here is a photo of Tim Gilmartin and his 1936 Cord 810 Westchester Sedan taken at the recent Concorso Santa Fe.
