1951 Henney

This 1951 Henney, just sold at the recent Simone auction down in Philadelphia, has surfaced at a gas station near me. Thanks to GTO for bringing it my attention and taking me over for a few photos. It's in running condition, has power windows and a freshly rebuilt hydraulic pump and a very straight body and excellent glass. It was raining lightly, hence the covers over the front windows which I assume won't raise. About 30,000 miles on the odometer. I was particularly interested in how the front and rear door closures were effected in the absence of a "B" pillar and one photo shows the bottom fixture. There was another "rare bird" in the same gas station, a 1951 Crown Imperial limousine.

Note to PackardAPL - I searched for a Henney tag on the car and could find none - where did Henney put their number tags on this vintage hearse?

thanks GTO for the proof-reading. If you go over again, would you see if by slim chance it still has the original ignition key and if so, what the key number is? You may remember that we identified about 4 or 5 1951 Henneys, sold by different dealers, that all had the same key number (P-1251).

This is not a bad looking Henney. This was a popular style with funeral homes of the period and was easy
to handle. I know of a couple that get occasional (high rent) use even yet. As to the Henney info--if the
id plates were not taken off at some time could have been found in several locations. So,... I'm assuming
that the firewall was examined, so I would recommend looking under/on/and around the front seat frame. It
wasn't too unusual for them to go missing. The prewar hearses without a pillar-post had both doors inter-
connected so that to open the side door- the drivers door had to opened first-as a safety measure. This is a
desirable Henney which appears would clean up to be a nice driver. If it has wound up selling at a gas station
I would assume that it was not priced out of sight and might be worth looking into.

PackardAPL, thanks for the info. The current location at the gas station was incidential to the sale and after the fact, I assume the new purchaser was local to area and perhaps had it there for some service to get it road-ready? The selling price Simone Auction had suggested was $4000-$6000 though I don't know the actual selling price.

I did a double-take on the glove box. I thought it had the cane pattern that I had on a 1951 300.
But it was just a light tan.
I never did see another cane pattern glovebox.

Every '48 to '54 Henney-Packard I've ever owned or seen, and I've owned and have seen quite a few, have used the same key. I've never made this known anywhere for obvious security reasons but apparently now it has become public knowledge.

Don - in the end that pattern didn't hold completely true as we later found quite a few 48-54 Henneys with different key numbers, though I suppose the switches could have been changed, or individual fleet owners ordered cars keyed the same as some of their other units. Have you looked on the reverse side of the patent plate? For many years Packard stamped the ignition key number in purple ink on the backside - you can just barely see it on this example.

I guess I'm over a year late in realizing I had a reply! I don't come here often but now I should be notified. My comment is of only my own experience but I'm sure there were many with different keys when the buyer specified it for whatever reason. I suppose it could have even been an extra cost option! I would suspect, however, that the majority used the same key and I know it fits my '48, two '51s and '52 along with a '53 belonging to a friend.
