Friends

I had a 1950 Eight for a long time which was and still is a very fine road car. The speedometer was quite accurate as far as I could tell. Not too long after I acquired it I had it pretty close to 85 on Route 8 in Connecticut, between Waterbury and Bridgeport. I had a witness in the car, he noticed the reading on the speedometer and suggested I might moderate the speed.

Probably about 90+ mph when new. But there should be a bid difference between how fast it CAN go and how fast a responsible person SHOULD drive 50+ year-old car.

Hey 34,
Had a ride in a 33? supercharged Alfa many years ago on the Milwaukee Mile.
The guy was thrashing it! Best ride of my life, I didn't know who the driver was @ the time but
he played that car like a Stradivarius. I can still hear that blower whine....
I might have been less nervous with a helmet on!
Too bad the speedo was bouncing between 40 & 100. :(

Couldn't figure out how my wife couldn't get her brand new car to keep up with my 1950 Packard on I-95 during the drive home when I bought it... Then she called me up on my cell phone in a frustrated tone to tell me to slow down. Apparently I was going over 90mph. :o Thought I was taking it easy at 65 mph because that's what the speedo read.

I drove 65 on a straight-away with a mild hill in my 1936 Packard 120 sedan. Went smoothly and as comfortable as my new Mercedes. I was on my way to a Concours d'Elegance.

I left Dayton Ohio where I worked for Roush and Hargrave Packard in 1953 driving a 1937120CD 1092 that I purchased from acustomer for $200.00!!!!(Those were the days)
Coming across Arizona I decided to see just how fast it would go flat out so on one of those miles long straight stretches I let it out and held it until the speedometer stabilized on 92mph. That just happens to be the top speed listed in the owners manual. So the speedometer validated Packards honesty concerning the speed of their cars.

I can't tell you how fast I have ridden in a Packard, but a lady I know well, the wife of a dental school classmate had a most interesting Packard experience as been told about but doesn't remember. It is one which probably will not be repeated, for some time in the mid 1930's, she was BORN in a Packard. How many others can make that statement? Let's hear from you.

I may have been in that same car. I was only 5 at the time!

Must have been a 53-56 4 door. Maybe black or navy. That's all I can remember. Well, that and looking up at the sky as we hit the banks.

Does anyone recall the hotel that hosted the event?
