wiring

Post by enterjudo » Tue Jan 12, 2021 10:22 am

Hi all, i have a 48 four door straight eight and it has been converted to 12 volt .i have decided to sort the wiring out as it has been messed up at some stage. but there is one thing i am not sure about ,on the bulkhead in the engine compartment there is a unit with three springs of varying length, with a thick white cable from top and bottom they go nowhere at the moment, so was wondering what it is? Any help would be appreciated .

How about a photo, Andy?

In the conversion to 12-volt, was the generator replaced with an alternator?

A photo would help but it doesn't sound stock. The 3 spring like pieces could be wire resistance elements -- possibly to lower the 12 volts back down to 6v for a component that did not have a 12v equivalent. Another possibility if there is some sign there might have been a trailer hitch and the wiring looks old is a resistance unit for electric trailer brakes. Those were somewhat popular back in the day.

will get a picture but you are right could be some kind of voltage dropper.

Just looking through the old paperwork i had with the car , its the power supply to the gauges so i would thing it is a voltage dropper , the gauges didn't work when i got the car so this is obviously why.
