They are glued.

The 1956 mats are black vinyl-skinned and mount vinyl down. But I have it in my mind that the 1953-'54 and perhaps the 1955 mats were plain fiberglass, yellow for 1953_54, and IIRC a marbled gray in 1955. I suggest you contact one of the sellers of these reproduction mats (Dwight Heinmuller is one) and confirm the details for your car.

Thanks Dave. Dwight was a big help. He said this hood pad is a reproduction of the 56. It will work for my car. And,I should glue it in place with the vinyl facing downward. I will tackle this job tomorrow.
