55 packard v8 352 trany

Post by Ltokie » Fri Jan 06, 2017 12:32 pm

I have a 52 studebaker 2r6 that someone put a 55 packard 352 engine in, with what I believe to be an ultramatic transmission... what I'm wondering is what four speed or five speed transmission can I use to replace the ultramatic?

Go to Bendtsen's Transmissions http://www.transmissionadapters.com/ and check out their setup for the Packard V8. The first item in the New Products section is their adapter kit for the 700R4 and is the most recent adapter for the Packard V8 engine. It seems to have been well received in the Packard community with several having been done on 55-6 Packards to good reviews. The adapter should work for your car since it is made for the Packard engine but going into a Studebaker I have no idea what other things you would have to come up with on your own. You can check out a few photos of the install in a Packard at Packardinfo. http://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modul ... mpost95724

Since you have a Studebaker you might also check your various club resources...In the OPTIONS selection at the 56J site http://www.1956goldenhawk.com Jack Nordstrom has a TH400 conversion program for the 56 Golden Hawk which used the 352 Packard engine and Ultramatic. I don't know how similar your frame would be to the Hawk or know how many of those conversions might have been done. If it is still an active project surely someone in the Studebaker group will know the status and whether it might be an easier way to go.

At one time there was a popular kit to adapt the Chrysler Torque Flite but I believe the company doing it has ceased making the adapter. There may still be some kits around but I believe the 700R4 has pretty much taken its place. I believe another conversion to the 4L60E has also gone by the wayside and AFAIK, not too many of those were done.
