Sixth Henry Joy Tour - June 2012 in the Berkshires

Post by Dave Czirr » Thu Sep 22, 2011 8:13 am

The Henry Joy Tours have proven to be very special and enjoyable events. Here's the advance flyer for the Sixth Henry Joy Tour in June 2012, to be based at a historic hotel in Stockbridge, MA. With Chuck & Janet Flinchbaugh as tour leaders we can again be assured of a wonderful itinerary and flawless planning and execution. More information should be coming as the date gets closer. (Attachment is downloadable for printing, or left-click to enlarge). I hope to see many of you there!

I made a reservation just yesterday. The Joy tours are great and Chuck and Janet will put on a nice one. Be careful, though. If you wish to arrive on Saturday then you be required to pay the going rate and not the advertised rate for the Packard club. I'm lookin' forward to it.

I just checked in with Chuck this morning to get a little update on the tour. These tours are very popular and it appears this one will be no exception, I believe he said they had 54 master registrations already and several more expected in the next few days. Rooms are still available at the meet hotel at our special rate thru April 4th so if you've been on the fence, you still have a couple of days to get the best rate. As to the Packards, it's looking like we will again have a very high percentage of prewar cars!!

Just the quickiest of notes while on tour, I'll edit and add commentary and pictures after I return. But a fine turnout; I'm told that except for 1933 we have at least one Packard from every year of production between 1926 and 1957. About 60 Packards in total and just over 50% are prewar which is just wonderful. To me at least, highlights thus far were, in addition to the wonderful scenery, wondeful Packard folk, and the backcountry driving has been the Norman Rockwell museum, and a couple of laps on the track at Lime Rock.

I'll be getting some commentary and photos of the tour up shortly. In the meantime you might enjoy the enclosed link to our day at Lime Rock. The photos are courtesy of Ryan McIntosh and Rick Roso and we thank them for their help.

Out of perhaps 40 Packards on the track, I must note that 3 New Jersey cars finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd after our 3 laps on the track, 41 LeBaron Sport Brougham (Jeff Guss), 54 Cavalier (Kenn Sly) and 34 Packard Eight (myself). It is with considerable reluctance that I add clarification that that is also the order in which we entered the track behind the pace car.

What a sight each morning, to see nearly 50 Packards line up near the hotel for the day's outing. In the first photo is the meet hotel, the Red Lion, dating to about 1793, a superb hotel choice for out meet. Other photos are just around the hotel area, and our arrival at the Edith Wharton home. That's Dave Robinson's 733 club sedan and Tom Vanini's RHD 236 phaeton.

At the Norman Rockwell museum. Then enroute to North Adams, photo from the dry comfort of a 41 LeBaron Sport Brougham on the way to the MOCA museum - a rainy start but great weather later in the day. That's PJ Ehmann's 833 roadster in which this writer later enjoyed a 30 mile rumble seat ride back to the hotel. Windy but just wonderful.

Here's something I think is a bit special. With about 50% prewar cars, someone suggested a group photo of all the 20s and 30s cars, and we had PLENTY of them. Among those who missed the photo op: Goldstein's 38 Eight convertible, Hathaway's 640 phaeton, Hourihan's 37 120 sedan, Hoyt's 37 Super 8 coupe victoria, Lamenzo's 37 Super 8 convertible victoria, and perhaps 1 other. In the last photo you'll notice Paul & Pam Friskopp's 38 Twelve formal sedan, they trailered in from NEBRASKA! And Smucker's 840 sport cabriolet came from IN. A wonderful array and what a treat to have so many Packards of this vintage on tour. That's your author's 34 Eight, 5th from the right.

That stunning Packard is Mark Smucker's 840 Sport Cabriolet. Then on to the Martin Van Buren (8th President of the United States) homestead, and lastly the Hancock Shaker Village. Another day of lovely weather and terrific, scenic roads with almost no traffic pressure - just us.

Ah, the bucolic back roads of MA, CT, and NY; a rather typical scene photographed thru this writer's windshield and I can't think of a better photo with which to close out this posting. What a wonderful way to spend time with friends and enjoy your Packard as it was meant to be used. A truly SUPERB event, it will be long-remembered and many thanks to Chuck & Janet Flinchbaugh and associates for organizing the 6th Henry Joy Tour!!
