Pre ignition pinging in 359 cu inch engine

Post by 41Packard » Fri Jan 18, 2013 1:42 pm

What a super web site. I expect to spend many hours gleaning bit of useful information. Thanks to all of you that have contributed questions as well as answers.

I have a model 5406 which of course has the 359 cu inch engine with the aluminum head with a Gear Start-Ultramatic. I've been the care giver for this wonderful automobile for almost ten years now. This summer I plan to drive the 2013 Lincoln Highway Tour from New York City to Kearney Nebraska , then possibly go on to San Francisco if my wife, the Packard, and I are still in agreement. I’ll be traveling with a loosely structured group. We’ll normally stay together at the same motel each evening and after breakfast have a morning briefing before we head down the road. Daily drives will be normally 200 to 250 mile segments. This will be the first time I’ve driven the Packard cross-country.

My concern is that I have the pre-ignition or early detonation pinging problem that occurs when accelerating or climbing to higher elevations that seem to be common with the 359 cu inch engines. I’ve had no success in correcting the problem and assume that the Packard Motor Co had finally pushed the compression envelop past its limit with this engine. Other than the pinging, the car is mechanically sound for the trip. Looking at maps I see that I’ll have to climb from sea level to 2,000 feet to get over the Atlantic coastal mountains. As I’ve done that before I’m comfortable with that part and the rest of the trip to Kearney is pretty level. However, continuing on to San Francisco will require climbing to maybe 7,000 feet when I cross the Rocky Mountains, then dropping to 3,500 feet to cross the Utah desert and then climb back up to 6,000 feet in California . Do you have any historical data from owners of the model 5406 who have driven these elevations? Ethanol gasoline also concerns me with this problem. To your knowledge are there precautions that I should consider? Are there suggestions from those who have made similar trips? I don’t want to burn a hole in a piston.

I would certainly appreciate any suggestions or recommendation you could provide me. I appreciate the service you are providing to the Packard owner community.

I had about 15 years experience with a 5406/5452 and preignition, though not at elevation. Are you up for a phone call this evening? If so, what's the best time to call (I'm EST)?

I tried to call twice but I guess you were unavailable, it went right to voice mail (I didn't leave a message). We'll have to work out another time.

Don't know what to say Dave. I was here all night reading the Forum. No indication on my phone that I missed any calls tonight. Mistery??? I'd definitely like to pick your brain. I have several commitments tomorrow afternoon. What would be a good time for you tomorrow evening after 9:00. 757-646-2165 is my cell and if there's no answer try 757-549-1008 which is my land-line home phone. Jere sends

Will one of you please post a summary on the discussion? It would be helpful in case others are experiencing the problem or run into it in the future. Thanks.

We're all flat-landers on the east coast so we're checking with some folks in Colorado to see if they can shed some light on the subject. Will post result, if any, when we get them. Jere sends.

I know it's been a while since I said I'd post results. Therefore; it's sorry, but no feedback was received from Colorado. I'll do a good tune-up and put my spare parts kit in the trunk and "Westward Ho!, head 'em up and move them out".

My plans are to participate in the Lincoln Highway Association Tour this summer and assess my situation when we arrive at Kearney NE. If both the Patrician and my wife want to continue, I'll resume westward. Thank for your help.
