Tubes for 840 disc wheels?

Post by Dkilbourne » Wed Jan 14, 2015 8:21 am

I bought a set of tubes with bent stems for my 840 from Lucas Classic Tires. The part of the stem that attaches to the tube is 5/8" too long. This positions the Schrader valve end too deep toward the center of the wheel to allow it to sit in the disc wheel opening. Does a member know where I can get the correct tubes?

First, why are you saying " 5/5" too long"? I am only asking because 5/5" is 1" (one inch) and 5/5" seems an odd way to put that. Did you perhaps hit the wrong key? Gene

That makes a lot more sense and I suspect that more people will step up to the plate to answer your question on this. I've never worked with an 840 so I can not help you but we do have several people on the Forum that do and can. Gene

Tubes are available with different length and shape of valve tubes. I would speak to your supplier to see if an alternative is available.

Thanks to all who have replied.

The only alternative stems from Lucas are very long. Russ said that they are designed for the inner wheel on a tandem wheel assembly. Still hoping for an answer.

Anybody have a suggestion? I am at a standstill with the wheels which are ready to have the new tires mounted.

Dick, I don't have a recommendation for you, but I sympathize and find myself in a somewhat similar situation. my 34 Eight is primarily a driving and tour car and the present tires (Lesters) have been on for about 23 years and perhaps 17,000 or so miles. Though the tires look excellent in a visual examination, it's time to replace them and what's holding me back are the proper metal stem inner tubes. Yes, they are available for my wheels but I've heard so many horror stories about their quality that I keep postponing the decision to put on new tires. And I'm a stickler for authenticity and don't what to go with rubber stems though I guess I could use the nickel-plated "cheaters" that are available that screw over the rubber stems to present the appearance of a metal stem. For the moment I've pretty much decided to just keep driving on them until a flat forces me to a decision.

Here's hoping we both find a solution to our inner tube issues.

Hi Dick and Dave

If I have understood correctly, the issue is that the valve stems are too short?

One possible solution is a screw on valve extension. These are available here in brass and in a range of lengths starting around 1". Not sure if that would be acceptable to you as a solution, but might be worth exploring. Of course, the extensions tend to be straight not curved and it is not really possible to bend a brass tube.

There are some on the tubes on my 533.

Just a thought..

To Dave Cizrr,

Thanks.

If I find an answer I'll post it so you can get a new set of tires and tubes!
