oil leak

Post by bakerallen » Fri Jul 13, 2018 7:00 am

I recently had the motor rebuilt on my 47 clipper. This is the smaller 8 cylinder motor. There is an oil leak at the back of the motor where it joins the transmission. The people who did the rebuild don't seem able to stop it. Is there something special about this connection?

I guess you already know your engine does not have a traditional rear seal but rather relies on a "slinger" intergral with the crankshaft that directs any oil to a return hole. It's effectiveness requires that the return oil drain hole is clear. I'm trying to remember if there is a plug seal at the rear end of the camshaft and/or main oil gallery, your rebuilder should know for sure and these would leak into the clutch area - are you seeing the oil leak from the drain at the bottom of the clutch cover? Other than those and the already mentioned slinger, no other way for oil to leak from the rear of the engine. Are you sure it's not leaking from the valve covers and just being blown or running back so it seems it's coming from the rear of the engine?

Unfortunately I am not very knowledgeable about motors, etc. I have some knowledge but it is limited. I don't think the mechanic is aware of the things you mentioned because he doesn't seem to be able to stop the leak. The rebuilder is not a amateur. He rebuilds motors all the time, but because Packard's are not very common, this is probably the only one he has ever worked on. I will pass this information on to him. Is there anything else he should know? Thank you for the reply.

I have not been under the car this time. I have it at home, and not having a lift it is a little hard to get under it. However, before the last attempt to stop the leak I did look at it and the oil was coming from the bottom of what I assume is the clutch cover.
