The timing chain case of the 1930 Custom 8 engine has this curious plug with an attachment . Can anyone tell me what the extension is for (instead of a simple inspection plug). Thank You.

Can't say I ever gave it a thought, though the same cap was used on both the 320 and 385 cubic inch engines for many years. I likewise look forward to an explanation.

It is designed to capture oil slung from the chain and direct a concentrated flow back on to the chain and generator drive assembly.
