Plating

Post by carole.vette@att.net » Sun Jul 12, 2020 4:59 pm

Hi all. Simple question for you guys {and gals}. When did Packard switch from nickel plating to chrome. I have a 526 Coupe and will be doing some of the plating soon and wanted to be correct. Also, if anyone out there has the back half of a coupe body, PLEASE let me know. From the back window to the back of the car. Thanks in advance, Andy Blake

I assume you're speaking specifically of exterior trim like radiator shells, headlamps, and the like. According to Turnquist's book "The Packard Story" the transition from nickel to chromium occurred during the 2nd Series Eight/3rd Series Six production run. It might be worth checking some other sources such as the AQ/Kimes-edited book to see there is agreement.

Much if not all the decorative underhood plated trim on the motor remained nickel on senior cars thru 1939.

Sorry, been on the road the past two weeks. According to "The Packard Book" by Kimes the plating up till 1929 {not including 29} is Nickel. So that answered that, During the trip we dropped of 80% of the plating at Advanced Plating in Tenn. They restore the part then do the plating and it's beautiful work.

How much of a hit is it to use chrome as opposed to the original nickle when restoring my car (I have a 23 that I am in the middle of tear-down)?

I don't know what the cost difference between nickel and chrome would be. A good shop should be able to give you different quotes easy enough. I just received my first batch of nickel back from Advanced Plating in TN and I couldn't be happier with their work. Our Packard is a 1928 526 Coupe. The hood ornament was very badly corroded and I just didn't think it could be save. They killed it! I couldn't believe how great it looks. LIKE NEW!! Anyone wants to see photos I can text them to you. I highly recommend AP.

I would love to see some images of your newly plated metalwork. I have a 533 and the plating (all nickel) has suffered the ravages of time. Perhaps you could post some pics here? or in the project blog section?

Thanks
