22nd series rear vent window gaskets( long wheelbase models)

Post by lc3packs » Tue Jun 07, 2016 7:09 am

Anyone have a short cut to removing the old rubber? I am trying to chisel it out from the inside so I don't scratch paint. After 68 years it is hard as a rock but very brittle. It breaks the lip part off eventually but the rubber in the tract does not move. I am thinking about maybe heating it with a hair dryer. Maybe a solvent but I would be afraid it would get on the paint. I thought the front ones were difficult but I could peel them out of the tract - not these. I imagine the 21st series lwb models are identical. Note, these vents are not in the door as in the sedans.

I have had luck, and seen used in restoration shops, lacquer thinner, it makes the rubber soft, gooey,
but eventually it evaporates and the rubber seems to be unaffected.
