Misidentified part

Post by John Harley » Sun Jul 26, 2009 5:48 pm

Hi all

I recently bought an Echlin VR57 voltage regulator for my 1950 Eight-(Delco System) I was told by the friendly man that this was a substitute for the VR56. IT IS NOT. It is negative ground, not the required positive ground. This was a contribution to the charging problems I had on the way to Warren.

Regards

John, According to my 1957 NAPA parts guide and my 1967 NAPA Echlin Ignition catalog, VR57 is the correct voltage regulator. The VR56 was never used for Packard.

Pacbrakeman, thanks for the follow-up on this. I've just checked my NAPA catalog and it agrees with yours, VR57 is the correct unit for John's 1950 Delco equipped car. I saw the unit he had, and it was marked in ink on the base stamping with a series of #s followed by "NEG" which leads me to believe he got the correct box from NAPA but the wrong unit inside.
