Franken-carb on 1939 120?

Post by cdnpaddy » Sun Apr 01, 2018 12:21 pm

The base plate has 327 stamped on it. The main body has 0-417 cast into it. The horn has WD-0 and 6-367 cast into it. And finally, the venturis have 1 1/8 cast into the top surface. So what is it? Thanks, Paul.

The WD-O series by Carter were very popular dual throat carburetors used on many makes and models. Those numbers you have will give a partial identification but to fully identify you'll need the numbers on a triangular brass tag affixed to one of the float bowl cover screws. If that tag is missing it will be extremely difficult to fully identify it.

Go back to the main website front page, click on "reference" and then "carburetors" to find an index to carburetors used by Packard.

Your car would have originally been equipped with a Stromberg EE-16; the '39 Super Eight might have had a WDO, the earliest use that I'm aware of but I believe it was a replacement for the OEM Stromberg EE-23. But check the index for yourself.

Thanks Dave. Lots of good stuff in there. Haven't found the franken-carb yet but I'll prolly just get a kit that kinda looks the same.

I'd be a bit wary of using a "generic" WD-O kit - I was just working with this scenario last week, turned out the "generic" needle and seat was too small and has been diagnosed as the cause of a fuel starvation issue. Best to get the proper kit if possible. If you would prefer to have a correct EE-16, I've got a good correct core on the shelf, hundred bucks, delivered.
