Bleeding hydraulic brake lines on '41 120

Post by introinc » Mon Feb 28, 2022 9:24 am

Dear friends, I had to drain the master cylinder of fluid by pumping the brake pedal after removing my brake switch. The cylinder was full of a "rusty soup" and it was not activating the new switch. I refilled the reservoir with fresh fluid about 1/2" from the bottom of the threads per the owners manual. Can anyone tell me the best way to bleed the lines to regain brake pressure at the pedal? I have located the lines into each wheel and the bleeder relief valve on each wheel. Thanks for your input.

Start the bleeding at the wheel furthest from the master cylinder, doing the wheel closest as the last one. Don't forget to check the fluid often so you don't let it get low and reintroduce air back in again.

Thanks so much Dave. Starting farthest from the cylinder was my guess but best to confirm.

If your master cylinder was full of rusty soup, it would be wise to plan for a rebuild of the master cylinder in the very near future. And to check or rebuild the wheel cylinders too. You have a single bore master cylinder, not a diagonal split system like modern cars. A failed system means no brakes whatsoever. Risking an accident is just not worth it.

Hope you get it working again soon though.
