Wheel cylinder

Post by Bluedevil » Mon Oct 22, 2018 6:24 pm

I took out a front wheel cylinder on my '38 1608. When I took it apart I noticed there were no wheel cylinder cup expanders. Am I missing them or did the not exist?

What does the Parts List indicate should be present? And also possible that aftermarket service parts may differ from OEM parts.

David,

No mention of the expander in the parts book. Motor Manual from the period shoes them in generic diagrams, just seemed odd they were not used by Packard.

You believe the parts in the wheel cylinder are still OEM and not the result of a cylinder rebuild sometime during the years? Packard just sourced their cylinders from Wagner or whomever like every other maker so it would seem strange they went with a different configuration. I suspect what you're seeing is something that happened during the life of the car, I've seen kits where the end of the spring is shaped like an expander to replace the traditional disc expander.
