Brake return spring color

Post by Sjscat » Fri Apr 17, 2020 10:06 am

Hi,

I have a 1950 8. The brake shoes with the shorter friction material face forward and the shoe with the longer friction material is installed aft on the car. There is a yellow and orange spring for each wheel. Which colored spring goes where? On the front brakes the orange spring was fore. On the back shoes the yellow springs are in the fore position.

Is this correct? Lots was not done correctly on the car in the past and all my Packard technical literature is in black and white.

Many Thanks,
Sid

From the 51-54 service manual, orange on primary shoe, yellow on secondary. I would suspect the 50 models are the same.

Thank you.

Which shoes are the primary shoes?

Ok. I see the primary shoe is the shoe with the shorter brake lining.

Correct and the primary shoe with short lining goes front or forward and secondary to the rear.
